Going to School

by Dean Friedman

I used to think school was a bore. I used to sit at my desk and snore.
I didn’t care for my ABC’s. I just tried to catch up on my Z’s.
But then one day the principle came. He stood up front and called my name.
He said, “Are you Sylvester Jones? And do you play the saxophone?”.
I said, “Yes, I am. Those are the facts. And, yes, it’s true I play the sax.”
“Well, If you can read music from the score, then you’re the one I’m looking for.
You see, next Tuesday at half-past three, there will be a school assembly.
And I need someone that can play the school song. So, what do you say?”

Well, I did not know what to do. You see, I can play the sax, that’s true.
But the words got stuck in my throat ‘cause I can’t read a single note.
So, I just kinda nodded my head. “Well, here’s the music,” the principle said.
And I was feeling like a fool. So, I waited around ‘til after school.
And I went to the teacher and said, “Teacher, please, can you help me out with these?”.
So, she sat me down and she explained that all notes have a name.
And what you read is the sound you get, like the letters in the alphabet.
So, I listened to what she had to say and I studied hard, every day.

And somehow the time it seemed to fly. And before I knew it a week went buy.
And I took my saxophone to school and I stood up on a stool.
And I waited for my teacher’s cue, and into my saxophone I blew.
And I knew then I had it made. And everyone liked the way I played.
And when the song was all done, I thought, “Gee, that was fun!”.
And I turned to my teacher who was smiling and I said, “Thank you for everything!”.
And I don’t sleep in class anymore. I pay attention and what’s more,
I found out that learning’s cool. And that’s why I like going to school.
